Governance & board development
The Good Governance Standard for Public Services, published by the Langlands Commission (2004), identified a number of key areas that are critical for the leaders of publicly funded organisations.
This publication set the benchmark to which governing bodies would be expected to work in the future. More and more organisations in the publicly funded sector, including social enterprises and housing associations, understand the need to work to the very highest standards to ensure their organisations thrive in an ever more competitive environment.
The MR Partnership has worked with a number of organisations to help them embrace the Langlands principles and put into practice good governance. Our consultants have designed and facilitated long-term development programmes to help Boards and their Executive teams identify what needs to be done to embrace the principles of good governance and, most importantly, to take action to make it happen.
Our expertise in this field was recognised by the National Housing Federation who asked us to jointly develop a toolkit for use by the Boards of housing associations across the United Kingdom.
Through research, we have identified 10 key priority areas that Boards and their Executive teams are keen to develop. These are:
- Role definition - Board members having clearly defined responsibilities
- Self assessment
- Behavioural competencies
- Appraisal frameworks
- Understanding of legal issues and liabilities
- Regulatory checklist
- Constitutional advice and models
- Dealing with poor performance
- Financial ‘savvy’
- Remuneration
The MR Partnership's experienced consultants are able to help organisations work towards solutions to these issues, and many more. Whether your organisation is large or small, talk to us today about how we may be able to work in partnership with you.
